How to Drive Safely in Windy Conditions

How to Drive Safely in Windy Conditions

Even in an area as beautiful as ours, we sometimes face some tricky weather this time of year. Fluky storms, wind, and the like. However, it’s the wind in particular that has our attention here. After all, how do you drive safely in windy conditions? Should you drive at all? We at Avondale Nissan have a few pointers to make sure you safely negotiate unpredictable wind conditions in these coming months.

Tip #1) Don’t Follow Too Closely Behind Trailers
We all know that the wind is most likely to affect the performance of the tall, boxy trailers, right? Yet, some drivers attempt to “draft” behind them, thinking that they’ll avoid the windy conditions by sitting in the vacuum behind the trailer. Don’t do this. You’re more susceptible to the windy whims of the trailer, and this is an unpredictable position to be in.
Tip #2) Don’t Drive So Fast
drive safely in windy conditionsWhen you’re driving well above the speed limit, you’ll have a tougher time reacting if you somehow lose control. And if you’re driving well above the speed limit when it’s very windy? Well, you’ve just doubled your trouble. As nice as it might seem to have the wind at your back, you’re taking a big risk when you put the gas down.
Tip #3) Take the Car Instead of the SUV
Are you in a two-car household? If so, you might want to consider taking the car instead of the SUV if it’s windy out. The wind affects the performance of an SUV much more than it will a passenger car, simply because of the SUV’s boxy frame. So, even though your instinct might tell you to take the bigger vehicle, smaller might be safer in this instance.
Tip #4) Limit your Distractions
When you’re being whipped to-and-fro by the wind, you might begin to feel it in your hands on the wheel. If it’s this windy out, this is not the time to check your email or send a text. Keep your hands safely at 10-and-2 on the wheel, don’t mess with the stereo controls, and simply keep your focus on the road ahead.
So, are you ready to take on some windy conditions? We hope that these tips help you out! However, if something does happen, and you need auto service, we encourage you to visit our service department at Avondale Nissan!
