As we say again and again, the process of owning a vehicle is something that is a continual work in progress. You buy a vehicle, and as it ages, certain parts need a little attention here and there. It’s as annoying as it is common, isn’t it? One of the things that can sneak up on a driver (especially in the Arizona heat) is cracking or dried-out leather, a problem that might be an issue if you drive one of the many Nissan models with leather upholstery. So, how do you keep your leather seats from cracking in the heat? Here’s what to know.
What causes leather to crack?
Cracking leather can have several causes, and is often exacerbated by the onset of heat. For example, when the heat comes, it can dry out leather surfaces, such as seats, steering wheels and dashboards. So, when the heat hits the leather directly, the ensuing drying-out will make the surface more susceptible to other problems. For example, dirt and dust will get into cracks and stain the leather, while hard or sharp objects — think car seats or bedazzled jeans, for example — can cause additional damage to your seating.
Food and liquid can also cause enormous damage to your leather seat, which makes things particularly difficult if you are someone who likes to eat or drink in the car. If you’re the type to eat or drink in the car, make certain to get that cleaned up in a hurry.
How do I keep the leather from cracking?
The cracking of leather doesn’t just have a way of making the interior or your car look worse. It also can be uncomfortable to sit on, sometimes getting so brittle that it seems a little bit worse each time you sit down. This is generally the result of two things: direct heat and UV rays from sunlight, and not taking proper precautions to minimize them. And that’s where conditioners and microfiber cloths come in.
You’ll know a conditioner is meant for leather because it’ll say just that, and microfiber cloths are every bit as important. Using a good microfiber cloth means that you’re being much more delicate with your upholstery, so that rather than scrubbing it — and risking abrasion — you’re just cleaning it with care.
Regular cleaning of your interior cabin will also keep dirt and debris from accumulating in your vehicle, even if it’s just vacuuming the seats and mats or cleaning the dust off of the dashboard.
