A Tire Flower Pot? 4 Creative Uses for Old Tires

We get a lot of people at Avondale Nissan for tire service, many of whom opt for a new set of runners when they get here. While some understandably decide to leave their old set with us to recycle, some customers prefer to keep their old tires for a variety of reasons. But what could these reasons possibly be? There are actually some pretty creative uses for old tires, a few of which we’ve outlined below.

Creative Uses for Old Tires

Make a Tire Swing

The oldest trick in the book! For this, you’ll probably want to use a truck tire, since those are the ones you likely grew up with. Find yourself a sturdy rope, tie an equally sound knot, and you’ll be almost ready to go. For those who’d like to go the horizontal route, they can use a chain and to bolster the chain in place. Perhaps most importantly, you’ll want to find a tree bough that is capable of holding onto such a swing.

Creative Ways to Re-Use Old TiresMake a Tire Flower Pot

You’ll regularly see these in parks and city property, as they are a cheap and effective way to give your tires new life. The video below illustrates this more clearly, but by just using a very sharp knife, you can turn any old tire into a planter your neighbors will envy and copy. Once important note, though: don’t grow edible plants, as they may contaminate the plants as the materials break down over time.

Recycled Tire Sandals!

You maybe haven’t noticed, but these are absolutely everywhere all of a sudden. Because there are so many used tires available, there are all sorts of outreach efforts to send sandals made of recycled tires to third-world countries. On a more stateside level, there is a Michigan-based outfit called Detroit Treads that does something similar. If you choose to do it yourself, of course, it’s easy as well.

Make a Compost Bin

This certainly qualifies as the easiest of all of the options here, since it literally just requires stacking the tires up. We recommend using tires that are uniform in size, since it’s good to make sure that there aren’t places for light to seep in. After the tires are stacked, add some old grass clippings and debris, and you’ll be making your own compost in no time!
