At Avondale Nissan, we know a thing or two about brakes. They’re obviously incredibly important, of course, but they’re also sometimes misunderstood, particularly as it comes to when they need replacing. Brakes are largely a mystery, but they don’t have to be. So, here are four easy ways to know when to replace your brakes.
Brakes are generally equipped with indicator strips that make loud squealing sounds when it’s time for new pads. This literally means that the pads have been worn to the point where they’re trying to alert you to this fact. If they wear past this point, you’ll then hear the grinding sound of metal on metal, since the pads have been worn through.
When brake pads wear well past the point where they’re effective, you’ll then feel vibrations in addition to the grinding. It might be a vibrations from the wheels, or you might even feel resistance from the brake pedal. If you feel a tug in any direction while braking, that’s the last straw; better get your vehicle in to Avondale Nissan.

The wheels on your car — you know, the metal rims that run outside your tires — you’ll most definitely see brake dust build up. This is the evidence of the brakes being rubbed, and it happens on every single car. However, eventually, when the brakes begin wearing out, you’ll see less dust over time. This is when you’ll need to give your brakes a look.
Your brake pads themselves can actually be examined, since they can usually be seen through the wheels on your car. What you’re looking for in this regard is the thickness of the pad; there will be about a quarter-inch of rubber when you’re getting to the indicator strip, and getting to the point where you’ll be needing to replace the brake pads.
Obviously, brakes are very important, and we take them seriously at Avondale Nissan. If you’ve experienced any of the problems mentioned above, visit us to have your brakes repaired!
