In the words of Southwest Airlines, Wanna get away? There are some days at Avondale Nissan when we just get the itch to hit the road, and now that winter is coming (inasmuch as Arizona has a winter), we’ll probably have a few days to do it. But where are the winter trips to take in Arizona? Here are our top five!

Arizona Snowbowl

Located just north of Flagstaff, the Arizona Snowbowl is among the oldest skiing and snowboarding locations in the southwest, having opened operations in 1938. They’ve also recently stepped up their game in recent years, having added snowmaking equipment in 2012.

The Grand Canyon

There probably aren’t many longtime Arizona residents who have missed the Grand Canyon to this point, but have you seen it in winter? There are far fewer tourists, and it’s certainly colder, but it’s also serene in a way that you won’t see during the dog days of summer.

Mount Lemmon Ski Valley

Tucson is its own brand of beautiful in the wintertime, and holds the distinct honor of being the southernmost ski area in the nation. It also offers great dining and sweeping vistas, all in a valley that is only about 30 miles north of Tucson.

Mormon Lake

While its name is somewhat misleading — there’s really not much of a lake to be found — Mormon Lake is like a step back into time. Along with its decidedly throwback feel, there are also an assortment of winter sports to explore, such as dog sledding and cross-country skiing.

Greer

Although it’s plenty far away from Phoenix, the drive to Greer is absolutely stunning. Once you’re there, you can enjoy laidback location for stargazing, fine dining, and hiking. Although this isn’t a location for skiing, there is plenty to keep you busy during the offseason.
