Can the Arizona Cardinals win the Super Bowl?

The NFL postseason is upon us, and after a regular season campaign that ended with a record of 13-3 and a #2 seed in the NFC, our Arizona Cardinals are set to put it all on the line. They open the playoffs with a visit from the #5-seed Green Bay Packers, who we drubbed in Week 16 38-8, but who are coming off of a convincing victory against the Washington Redskins. Looking ahead, let’s get a read on our chances this postseason, and specifically ask, can the Arizona Cardinals win the Super Bowl?

Can the Arizona Cardinals win the Super Bowl?

Does experience count? For as long as Coach Bruce Arians and QB Carson Palmer have been around the NFL, their personal experience in big games is actually pretty minimal. Last year’s Wild Card loss to the Carolina Panthers was Arians’ first postseason game as a head coach — he missed a 2012 postseason tilt as coach of the Colts with an illness — and this game will be Palmer’s third as a starting QB. If they can overcome the experience of teams such as the Packers, Seahawks and Patriots, it shouldn’t be a factor.

Can anyone keep up with the Cardinals’ speed? All season long, the perimeter speed of the Cards has been a problem, with vaunted defensive backfields such as those of the Packers, Seahawks and Bengals all having trouble at various points. The young trio of John Brown, Jaron Brown and David Johnson joins forces with veteran wideout Larry Fitzgerald, giving teams fits. If this group gets going, watch out.
How will the other divisional game shake out? It’s never good to overlook an opponent, and the Green Bay Packers will almost certainly put up a better fight than they did in Week 16. However, it’s worth noting that the other NFC game pits #1 seed Carolina against divisional foe Seattle. Should Arizona beat Green Bay, this will either mean a road game against Carolina or a home game against the hated Seahawks. Things could get interesting.

Will injuries hurt us? For as much of the young guys have stepped up, there have been two big injuries that have framed this season: RB Chris Johnson and DB Tyrann Mathieu. Both have forced teammates to step up; the running backs have filled in admirably, while the jury is still out on the defensive secondary. If the loss of Mathieu can be overcome, the Cardinals should be okay.
We’d like to wish the Arizona Cardinals luck in the coming weeks of the postseason, and hope that you’ll come see us soon at Avondale Nissan!
