It’s called the “Smart Highway,” and it’s become something of a curiosity in automotive circles since it won Best Future Concept at the recent Dutch Design Awards.

What crazy I Robot-inspired fever-dream is this? That’s the question many of us at Avondale Nissan have been asking recently after hearing that several companies–including Google, most notably–are working to perfect the world’s first (real) self-driving car.

The continued development of forward-thinking safety features has long been an area of incredible innovation at Nissan, and this is never more evident than with the recently announced Nissan Smart Rearview Mirror. Although it isn’t yet available in vehicles at Avondale Nissan, the Smart Rearview Mirror has already received recognition from the World Traffic Safety Symposium, who awarded Nissan with the 2014 Traffic Safety Achievement Award.
This is the sort of news that will sit eternally in my totally-real “Stop-the-Presses” folder, right next to the story of the Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan episode and the fact that my parents attended–and enjoyed!–Book of Mormon. For the record, “Stop-the-Presses” news has to have a certain unbelievability about it, making a person immediately verify its veracity. And yes, this is just such a tidbit. That is because, according to various news sources, we at Avondale Nissan have received word that Nissan has created the world’s first “self-cleaning car.” Let that sink in.
