Fall Travel Hazards

Now that fall is in full swing–a fact that certainly hasn’t gone ignored on Avondale Nissan’s blog, of course–drivers face a whole set of additional traffic obstacles that are special to this season. And, with our full service department at Avondale Nissan, these are problems we’re a little more familiar with than most. Drivers crash, and then they come see us. So what sorts of obstacles can you expect to weather during the fall, you ask? Here are three prominent fall travel hazards you’ll likely encounter this autumn in the Phoenix area.

Frequent Leaf Cover
The most obvious of fall’s travel hazards doesn’t get the respect it deserves. Wet leaves can become extremely slippery, which is dangerous when they become densely packed. Also–even though this is a rarity in our area–they are extremely dangerous when they become frozen as well. If you’re in an area with twisty roads and heavy leaf cover, drive cautiously and avoid using cruise control.
Changing Weather Patterns
Fall regularly has weather that is less predictable than in other seasons, with fog, rain and sleet regularly creeping up on the radar. Maintain a safe following distance behind other vehicles when driving, limit distractions in your vehicle and be aware of construction zones and potential for hydroplaning. Also, be certain to check weather developments prior to making travel plans.
Shorter Hours of Daylight
When the calendar starts turning, that days are going to begin getting shorter as well. This leads to daily commutes during twilight hours, when your eyes adjust slower and visibility becomes much more difficult to achieve. It also becomes harder to see the surrounding elements: wildlife, dogwalkers, even trick-or-treaters become nearly invisible.
