The End of Radio? Five Great Automotive Podcasts

When you head out on the open road, what do you listen to? With so much available to listen to these days, from SiriusXM radio to streaming Bluetooth-powered audio, the choices have never been more diverse. One of the most popular audio formats to come along in recent years is the podcast, which takes all the enjoyment of today’s news and culture and puts it through an easy-to-access talk-radio prism. There are also many great automotive podcasts that we can personally recommend. So, from your friends here at Avondale Nissan, here are five of our favorites.

Five Great Automotive Podcasts

Cruise Control Radio

When we said earlier that some podcasts play like talk radio, this was one of the pods we were referring to. The hosts pal around like two buddies in a garage, which is probably because that’s exactly what they are. They’re opinionated, informative and hilarious, and since there are usually two shows per week, you’re never short on new episodes just around the corner.

CarStuffBest Automotive Podcasts

The “How Stuff Works” network puts out many of the most popular and informative pods available today, such as “Stuff You Should Know” and “Stuff You Missed in History Class.” Using the same “obscure facts plus humor” equation that makes the others so popular, CarStuff gets into some things you never even thought to ask, such as the history of stoplights.

AutoBlog Podcast

There probably isn’t a more respected online resource for gearheads than AutoBlog, so it should come as little surprise that its podcast is excellent as well. This one is aimed at the true auto enthusiast, offering news, reviews and previews of upcoming models. Also, there are over 450 episodes currently available, so there is no shortage of recordings to parse through.

Car Talk

This pod has long been a personal favorite, since it’s so clearly different from the others. It’s produced by NPR, a leader in podcasting with such titans as “This American Life” and “Serial.” This one is similar in its broad appeal, and isn’t just for car lovers. If there’s an automotive podcast that is truly for everyone, it’s probably this one.

CarCast with Adam Carolla

Adam Carolla has one of those voices that you’ve heard everywhere — he pops up in cartoons and on nighttime talk shows, particular the one hosted by longtime friend and collaborator Jimmy Kimmel. However, he’s best on the radio, and he truly shines on CarCast. He’s inquisitive and thorough, and has a real rapport with co-host Matt D’Andria. If there’s one thing this one has that others do not, it’s the frequent addition of celebrity guests.
