With weather like ours, it’s safe to argue that it’s never not grilling season. However, summer is when the grills kick into high gear, so that’s what we’re going to talk about today. There are many ways that grilling can go wrong, usually just by lack of oversight by the resident grillmaster. That’s why we at Avondale Nissan have compiled this list of grilling safety tips, each of which can help to make your cookout safe and delicious!
Short Sleeves, Long Handles. When you’ve got a good flame whipping up, you want to be sure that you’ve got handles long enough to keep from hurting yourself in the heat. Additionally, you don’t want to wear sleeves that are long or loose that might drag into the grill grates.
Only use your grill outside. Are you the type who likes to grill, rain or shine? Or, in these parts, even if it’s so hot that you don’t want to stand outside? Even in these situations, you should never try to grill inside your garage, or anywhere that doesn’t provide full ventilation. You also don’t want to use your grill in areas that have low-hanging tree cover or where there is a lot of dry, flammable material nearby.
You are the master of the grill. No, seriously. When the grill is running, you need to keep other activities far away from it, and the best way to do this is to make it known that the grill is your domain. No games nearby, no moving the grill once it’s ignited, and don’t leave it unattended. You are the boss of the grill, and this is a huge responsibility.
Be ready to quell flames. Sometimes, the flames will become bigger than you’d intended. This is when it’s important to have something to put the flame out, something such as baking soda (for grease fires), sand, a water hose or a fire extinguisher.
We hope that you have a very delicious and entertaining grill season this summer, but most importantly, a safe one! And we hope to see you soon at Avondale Nissan!
