Holiday Events in the Phoenix Area
By now, you’ve probably begun putting together your calendar of planned events for the holiday season, and the area’s communities and service providers have certainly followed suit. So what are you to do? Which celebrations stand out? Well, we’ve done some of the work for you. ZooLights — Phoenix Zoo — Runs through January 11th
Zoos around the country are discovering that combining the sensory experience of a Zoo with the visual splendor of the holidays results in an unforgettable event, and the Phoenix Zoo’s is one of the best anywhere. With 3.8 million lights and over 700 separate displays, the lights are enough to get people talking by themselves. Factor in the Polar Express 4D experience, camel rides and the Stingray Bay touch tank, and it’s truly one for the ages.
Las Noches de las Luminarias — Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix — Runs through December 30th
Where the ZooLights event is truly one for all ages, this ambient light display trends more toward the adult attendee. With thousands of lights adding a romantic glow to the area’s beautiful landscape, this has become one of Phoenix’s most well attended holiday events. Now in its 37th year, those who attend can enjoy a glass of wine or cup of cocoa while 10 different entertainers perform throughout the park. This one is not to be missed.
A Christmas Carol — Playhouse on the Park, Phoenix — Runs through December 20th
Did you know that Christmas as we know it–the spirit of giving, forgiveness, togetherness, etc.–might never have come to be if not for A Christmas Carol? It’s a fact. So enjoy one of the stories that shapes the holidays in this performance from the Southwest Shakespeare Company. The effects promise to be first-rate, and the story will leave you warm and lifted long after you leave.
Showstoppers Live Holiday Spectacular — Casino Arizona, Scottsdale — Runs through December 20
If A Christmas Carol appeals to your more loving nature, this show will appeal to the part of you that simply desires to be entertained. Featuring favorites from Elvis, Sinatra, Natalie Cole and many more, you’ll get a jazzy and lively take that promises to deliver more than a little holiday cheer. And, should you be the holder of a Player Rewards Card at the Casino, Buy-One-Get-One tickets are available at the box office. But hurry; they’re going fast!
Winter Wonderland at Westgate — Westgate Entertainment District, Glendale — Runs through December 27th
Sure, you might not typically take much joy from what is essentially just an enormous mall. However, Glendale’s Winter Wonderland does it better than most. You can get a free horse-drawn carriage ride, go ice skating, get pictures with Santa Claus, and even enjoy live entertainment. And, you know. go shopping.
