Five Tips to Keep Pets Safe on Halloween

Have you planned your Halloween party yet? If you’re still in the process of making your Halloween plans, the likelihood is that you’ve thought of your costumes, of your itinerary for the evening, and possibly even consulted our site for some great local haunted houses to attend. However, if you’re having a party at your house, have you thought about how your plans might affect your pets? Here is how to keep your pets safe on Halloween.

Keep Pets Safe on Halloween

Keep your pets away from the festivities. You obviously know your pet better than anyone, and there’s a chance that your pet does just fine in crowds. However, also take into account how the crowds react to a pet. Maybe trick-or-treaters don’t want to be barked at or licked, or imagine that one of your guests steps on your cat’s tail. You don’t want to have a negative reaction from pets or guests in this case.
Avoid candles when decorating. Animals are often pushing to be a part of our lives, whether it’s sleeping on our electronics or begging for food. They’ll also nonchalantly rub against things without knowing what they’re rubbing up against. So imagine that your pet drags its tail over an open candle or jack-o-lantern. Better yet, just avoid setting out open flames so you don’t need to think about it.

Don’t give pets any sweets. Probably Rule #1 for pet owners is that sweets are bad for them. Dogs, as you might be aware, can ingest an incredible amount of food quickly, and candy is no different. In this case, it can lead to diarrhea, vomiting or worse. Also avoid letting them have raisins, or anything containing an artificial sweetener called xylitol.
Consider your pet before you dress it up. Let’s be honest here: when you dress up your pet, you aren’t really doing it to benefit the animal. You’re thinking about the awesome pictures you can post on Facebook, amirite? That’s why, when you are dressing up your pet, don’t put them in any costume that will confine them in any way. Also, remember to avoid anything that they might chew or that might be swallowed.

Keep the liquor away from them. We of course aren’t suggesting that you’d knowingly give your pets something harmful. However, dogs and cats have been known to drink from left-behind cups, and this can make them very ill. So, before you turn in for the night, be sure to get all cups and liquids away from where your pet can reach them, lest you wake up with a very sick puppy on your hands.
We hope that these tips help keep your pet happy and healthy this Halloween, and that you’ll come see us soon at Avondale Nissan!
