Distracted driving often seems like a problem experienced by the proverbial “everyone else,” but that all changes when it happens to you. The truth is, distracted driving is an unquestioned epidemic, with over 430,000 injuries reported due to distracted driving accidents in 2014 alone. With those sort of numbers, you’d think that people would be rising up against it; unfortunately, they often don’t know what they’re rising up against. Here are the most common driving distractions that drivers face today.
Whether you’re using your phone for calling, texting, playing Candy Crush or checking your Tinder, it’s the distraction that keeps on distracting. We’ve become so attached to our phones that there is rarely a time where it doesn’t capture a percentage of our attention, which is why we encourage drivers to simply put their phones away when the car they are driving is in motion.
Maybe you’re someone who always pairing your mp3 players (or cell phones, more likely) with your car stereo. Maybe you use GPS navigation and are guilty of putting addresses in when you’re driving. Perhaps you have trouble understanding your car’s newfangled climate system. Regardless what the situation may be, these features can pull your attention away from the road plenty long enough to cause an accident.
You may be the type who leaves for work without being fully ready for the day ahead, and you fix your hair and makeup in your rearview mirror as you drive. Even if you’re doing this as you’re idling in traffic, it distracts you from the road ahead. We guess what we’re saying is, don’t do your makeup and drive at the same time.
We often think of a Drive-Thru as a wonderful convenience, but is it really? It might actually be the greatest distraction of all. Think of it: you get a burger from fast-food joint, then the lettuce and ketchup are all over your hands and lap, while one hand struggles to stay on the wheel. Do you think this might be a distraction? Of course it is.
For younger drivers, it’s not uncommon to put a bunch of friends in the car, crank the music up, and act like you’re cast members of some fantastical MTV show. This causes an unbelievable amount of distraction, which is why many parents try to limit the amount of passengers that their kids can have in the car. We suggest that you do the same.
Because driving is a two-way street, literally, it’s on all of us to do our part to prevent distracted driving. We hope that you’ll take the necessarily responsibility, and that you’ll come see us soon at Avondale Nissan!
