Decoding the Nissan IDS Concept and the Next-Generation LEAF

It’s no secret that the Nissan LEAF is among our favorite models here at Avondale Nissan. As the Phoenix-area’s preeminent seller of our popular EV, any news that crosses our desks in regard to this model is certainly welcome. That is why the information regarding the next-generation Nissan LEAF, and its relation to the Nissan IDS concept shown here, is especially exciting.

The Nissan IDS Concept and the Next-Generation LEAF

There’s a groundswell of rumor that is suggesting that the Nissan IDS and the new Nissan LEAF are in fact one and the same. Is this true? Well, not exactly.

The Nissan IDS Concept

The photos you see on this page are of the Nissan IDS Concept, which was first revealed at the 2015 Tokyo Auto Show. Its sleek design features LED striping all along its exterior, while the carbon-fiber hatchback design will be lighter and more efficient than ever. It also borrows styling cues from models such as the Maxima and Murano with its distinctive V-Motion Grille and floating roofline. It also reportedly has a feature called Piloted Drive mode, which is an autonomous driving technology that works to mimic a driver’s style and driving preferences, so not only does it do the work for you, but also does it just as you’d do it yourself.
And then there is this: since the IDS Concept was announced, it’s been rumored to have a 60-kWh battery, offering more than twice the capacity of the current LEAF. So, will this be the case?

The Next-Generation of the Nissan LEAF

All vehicle redesigns are exciting in their own ways, but with the Nissan LEAF, it’s a little bit different. It’s been such an amazing upstart, and it’s popularity was far from a foregone conclusion. That’s what makes for such excitement around the LEAF, which is poised to strike fear into the Chevy Bolt EV and Tesla Model 3 with this redesign.
Chief among the new developments is the previously mentioned 60-kWh battery, which has been confirmed for addition to the next generation of the LEAF. Depending on the driving habits and terrain of the operator, Nissan reports that this will result in a range of up to 220 miles. Additionally, Nissan has been subtly hinting that the new LEAF could possibly take stylistic cues from the IDS Concept, which is something that we at Avondale Nissan would certainly be in favor of.
