Nissan IDx Concept

A few years ago, long before we got our first glimpse of the 2016 Nissan Maxima or the 2016 Nissan Titan, there was a different future Nissan model that stole our hearts. It was slickly designed, had a distinctly retro feel, and gave hope to all of us at Avondale Nissan who would love to see a compact muscle coupe like we used to see in the late sixties and early seventies. It directly recalled the iconic styling of the famed Datsun 510, and it was a joint project between Nissan and some pioneering computer designers called “digital natives.” Long story short, when we saw the Nissan IDx concept, we fell in love a little bit.

The pictures on this page should help to explain why. To say there’s nothing like it on the current auto market is an understatement; we aren’t sure we’ve ever seen anything like it, and that’s why we were so excited when we thought it was getting an upcoming release. The IDx was created in two styles, the more retro IDx Freeflow and the sportier IDx NISMO, each of which offered a rear-wheel-drive performance platform. This, of course, would be revolutionary for a compact coupe, and it truly gets our blood running just to think about it.
The IDx was also rumored to be considering a naturally-aspirated 2.0L four-cylinder engine that was to churn out over 180 horsepower, enticing numbers for a compact of its size. All that was left was to set a release date, and the people would come running.
Or so we hoped. After some hiccups regarding its chassis size and cost concerns, we now aren’t certain that it will ever get past the much-dreaded concept phase. Which, on behalf of all of us at Avondale Nissan, we truly hope isn’t the case.
