Nissan Invents Self-Parking Office Chairs

We don’t like to use hyperbole here at Avondale Nissan, but today’s post might involve the greatest invention in the entire recorded history of humanity. This ranks up there with the invention of sliced bread, or perhaps the discovery of gold in California in 1849. The excitement is based on this: Nissan has invented self-parking office chairs. We were already pretty bad at pushing in our office chairs, but now we understand that we were just biding our time waiting for Nissan to save us from office furniture anarchy.

So what exactly are we working with here? The Nissan self-parking office chair employs four wall-mounted motion cameras, which work in unison to take inventory of each seat’s location and proximity to each other. Then, the user claps their hands — The clapper is back, people! — and the chairs dutifully arrange themselves as they were meant to be: pushed in, and neatly aligned. For OCD office managers, this might be the best day of their lives.

Of course, Nissan is in the business of making cars, so what is the point of making self-parking office chairs? Well, we’re thrilled that you asked. The self-parking chairs use the same technology as the Nissan-exclusive Around View Monitor, which you might recognize from its availability in models such as the Murano and Altima. (You also might recognize it because it’s totally awesome.)

The Around View Monitor uses four cameras mounted on all sides of the vehicle, then takes that information to supply operators with a bird’s-eye view of their surroundings as they park or maneuver their vehicle. Parking is obviously a game of inches, and with the Around View Monitor pulling its weight, drivers don’t have to worry about hitting curbs or other vehicles.
While we won’t see the Nissan self-parking office chairs in boardrooms any time soon, we can get excited about the continued prevalence of the Around View Monitor and Intelligent Parking Assist on new Nissan models.
