Is it rough or jerky when you shift? Regardless of the car — okay, our CVT is pretty darn smooth — for most cars, you’ll always feel it when you shift between gears. You’re supposed to feel it a little, and it isn’t a bad thing. However, feeling it too much is bad, and if it’s rough or jerky, it likely means you need to have your transmission looked at.
Is it slipping when you accelerate? If you hit the gas, do you sometimes never feel any acceleration? This is the definition of gear slippage, and it’s a big issue. It isn’t only damaging to your transmission as it’s happening, it can also present a very dangerous situation for you as a driver.
Do you hear worrisome noises between gears? File this under “taking the good with the bad”: when your car has a problem, it usually tells you about it the best way it knows how, with noises and shakes. Your transmission is no different. If you’ve got grinding or whining or whirring, it’s your gearbox saying, “Hey, I’m sick.”
Does your car hesitate to shift between park, drive and reverse? This is a biggie. If you try to shift into drive or reverse from park and don’t immediately notice a change in direction from your car, this is definitely indicative of transmission trouble. Do you notice pink fluid on your driveway? Another biggie. Low transmission fluid can be the result of a few different catalysts, each of which is cause for concern. It could be just a leak, or could speak to a larger transmission issue. In either case, a trip to the service department is in order.
