There are some parts of your car that, without proper knowledge, might defy explanation. Either it seems like something that might be a stylistic choice that just became commonplace (think window tint or ground effects) or perhaps it’s something mechanical that is phased out over time (think carburetors). But whither the spoiler? Many models have spoilers, but do they serve a purpose?

What Does a Car Spoiler Do?

There are actually many benefits to having a spoiler on your car, most of which we’re pretty certain that you haven’t thought of.

It Helps Maintain Traction

This is the chief benefit of your car’s spoiler: when traveling at high speeds, it helps to keep it on the road. When it’s driving fast, a car can be lifted slightly, which can cause it to spin out of control. The spoiler then pushes the car back down, allowing the car to more easily grip the road.

It Boosts Fuel Efficiency

Cars often have spoilers on the front of cars as well, often referred to as dams or fascia as well. These work to push the air around the car, which reduces the drag on your vehicle. By doing this, your vehicle needs to expend less energy to move forward.

They Improve Style and Visibility

We probably don’t need to tell you that a spoiler looks cool, and that some cars look downright naked without them. But since they gained popularity in the 1970s, it’s also become clear that they improve your car’s versatility as well. Many even have brake lights included in them, which help vehicles behind you to know when you’re slowing down.

They Can Reduce the Weight of a Vehicle

This may seem like it’s counterintuitive, but bear with us here. Remember when we said that the spoiler helps maintain traction? So, knowing this, automakers often will use lighter materials in construction, since the spoiler can act much like bulky pounds would by keeping the car on the road at high speeds.
As you’re certainly aware, many of our new models at Avondale Nissan are offered with spoilers, including the GT-R, 370Z and Maxima. And now, given this new knowledge, you can take comfort in the knowledge that spoilers don’t only look great, but also serve a specific purpose as well. We hope you’ll come check out our new sports car lineup at Avondale Nissan soon!
